SUMMARY:Living with Fire
DESCRIPTION:Saving Lives\, Homes and Forests\nChad Hanson\, PhD\, Ecologist\nDirector\, John Muir Project\nContributor to the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation publication\nA New Direction for California Wildfire Policy—Working from the Home Outward \nJoined by: Maya Khosla\, Wildlife Biologist\, Writer and Filmmaker\nDr. Hanson brings good news:\n\nHomes can be made much safer even though climate change has created extreme conditions leading to more wildfires that cannot be contained with fire suppression efforts.\nMaking homes fire-resistant (hardening homes) is the most effective and cost-efficient way of preventing catastrophic loss from wildfires.\nAfter a fire\, forests retain 89% of their sequestered carbon. If undisturbed\, it provides superb wildlife habitat while in can recapturing lost carbon often within 10 years.\nIf we honor the science\, we can strengthen forests– our most valuable resource to fight climate change.\nWe do not need to tear out forests to save communities\nCity dwellers can learn how to avoid ignitions from embers (firebrands) that blow far ahead of fires. Can we avoid another Coffey Park\, which had Hwy 101 for a firebreak?\n\nLearn more and see home fire safe examples and materials\nPresentation\, film\, Q&A\nDoors open at 6:30 pm. Suggested donation: $10.\nCo-hosts: Napa Vision 2050\, Napa Climate Now/350BayArea and Napa Sierra Club

Following the service\, from 10:30 AM until Noon\, in the Newton Room\, representatives from the City of St. Helena\, American Red Cross\, COAD (Community Organizations active in Disasters)\, Napa County Sheriff’s Office\, St. Helena Fire and Police Departments and others will be at individual tables where they will have brochures and can answer any questions you may have. \nPlease join us and learn how to be better prepared for your family and neighborhood community. We especially wish to invite visitors and neighbors to join us for this informative event. \nRefreshments will be provided by the Emergency Preparedness Team of Grace Church.
