SUMMARY:Climate Science Seminar Part 1
DESCRIPTION:The Climate Science Seminar Part 1 is a one-day interactive workshop taught by Professor Andrew Isaacs. This seminar is modeled after his semester-long MBA course “Climate Change and Business Strategy\,” which he teaches at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. \nThis 30-person workshop is intended for individuals with an interest in how climate change is impacting business\, and how business sustainability depends both on mitigating climate impacts and on adaptation to ongoing climate change. All attendees will leave with a better understanding of climate science and the risks and opportunities climate change poses for wine businesses. While the course does not shy away from using scientific terms\, the material is easily accessible\, and no prior familiarity with climate science is assumed. \nLunch will be provided. \nRegistration is available on the Napa Valley Grapegrowers website. To encourage more folks to spend the day learning about climate science\, NVG would like to extend a discount of 35% off general admission. To utilize this discount\, enter NVGPartner at checkout.

SUMMARY:Wildfire Resilience Decision Support Framework
DESCRIPTION:We will be having Molly Oshun from Sonoma Water\, Deanne DiPietro from the Conservation Biology Institute\, and Sashi Sabaratnam from the UCCE on the call to talk about Sonoma County’s Wildfire Resilience Decision Support Framework. It is a set of online tools and resources intended to support the planning and implementation of fuel management projects. \n\n\n\nThe Sonoma County Wildfire Resilience Decision Support Framework provides critical information at multiple scales to support strategic\, ecologically-sensitive fuel management across the region. The Decision Support Framework is part of a county-wide coordinated initiative to prioritize actions and investments by Sonoma Water\, University of California Cooperative Extension\, the Community Wildfire Protection Plan\, and Sonoma County’s Office of Climate Action & Resiliency. \n\n\n\nTwo online decision-support tools make up the Decision Support Framework: \n\n\n\nThe Wildfire Resilience Planner: Strategic Planning at the Landscape Scale \n\n\n\nThe Wildfire Resilience Planner is an online decision support tool that applies a wide range of data from Sonoma County and other sources to help prioritize locations where the reduction of fuels will best protect lives and property\, community infrastructure\, ecosystem services\, and biodiversity. The tool will support collaborative planning of projects on public and private land\, helping to leverage individual efforts for a unified and strategic approach to fuels reduction and vegetation management. This tool is available for testing and will be released in Spring 2023. \n\n\n\nThe Wildfire Fuel Mapper: Property-Specific Information for Fuels Management \n\n\n\nThe University of California Cooperative Extension\, Pepperwood Preserve\, and Tukman Geospatial have developed the Wildfire Fuel Mapper\, a website that provides maps\, information\, and resources for designing and implementing projects to reduce wildland fuels. A detailed report with maps of vegetation\, fuels\, topography\, and other characteristics of the land needed for project planning are available by parcel\, which the user can access by choosing the parcel of interest. The Fuel Mapper also provides information about experts\, specialists\, and funding sources to support project implementation.

SUMMARY:150-Year Fire Vegetation History Webinar
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, historical ecologist Arthur Dawson presents the findings of a three-year CALFIRE-funded study conducted in partnership with Pepperwood\, Mark Tukman\, and Dr. Jim Thorne. Arthur will trace the story of fire and vegetation in the North Bay over the last 150 years. Integrating a wide variety of sources reveals the surprisingly dynamic patterns of chaparral\, hardwood and conifer woodlands in response to wildfire\, timber harvest\, and wildfire suppression. \n\n\n\nIt took generations to set the stage for the catastrophic fires of the last decade. It will take several more to change that trajectory. Altering course is going to require hard work on the ground guided by a deeper understanding of the relationship of fire\, vegetation and the role of human beings in the landscape. \n\n\n\nWebinar Replay\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQ4Lr2thEvM\n\n\n\n\n\nWebinar Flyer\n\n\n\nRegister in Advance

SUMMARY:Napa County Invites the Community to Participate in Virtual Town Hall Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to participate in a virtual Town Hall meeting on Wednesday\, January 25\, at 6 p.m. to discuss current and future fire services provided by Napa County. \n\n\n\nNapa County Fire Department is conducting a study\, known as a Fire Master Plan\, to take a comprehensive look at all aspects of the needs of the community and how adequately the Department meets these needs. The study is being conducted by Wyoming-based AP Triton\, an industry-leading consultant specializing in fire department master planning. \n\n\n\nThe purpose of a Long-Range Master Plan is to evaluate the County Fire Department in relation to the community’s current risks\, anticipate community growth (and therefore associated risk)\, and recommend solutions. The study will review fire department response data\, department staffing levels\, apparatus and station conditions and locations\, and the County’s unique hazards and infrastructure. The study is intended to position the County to address that growth in advance with appropriate resources and infrastructure.   \n\n\n\nDeputy Fire Chief Jason Martin will host the virtual meeting\, with AP Triton’s consultants moderating and providing an overview of the project. At the conclusion of the meeting\, the consultants will launch a survey to provide further opportunities for community input.  \n\n\n\nThe Virtual Town Hall will be held on Wednesday\, January 25\, 2023\, at 6 p.m. on Zoom. SUMMARY:Napa Fire Hazard Severity Zone Maps - Public Comment
DESCRIPTION:CAL FIRE Releases Updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone Map for Public Comment\n\n\n\nAfter years of planning and collaboration with fire scientists\, firefighters\, stakeholders\, and local community partners\, the new map reflects changes in fire hazard in unincorporated\, rural areas\, as experienced in California over past years. \n\n\n\nJoin CAL FIRE at the Napa County Library in Napa on Monday\, January 9\, at 2:00pm for a public hearing and have an opportunity to provide comment and feedback on their new fire hazard severity zone maps. \n\n\n\nThe last time these maps were updated was in 2007 and now 2023 will provide the new updated version available publicly.  This process will allow you as the public to provide verbal comments prior to final adoption by the State. There is also an avenue for written comments to be submitted during the 45-day period (ending Feb 3\, 2023)\, or submit both written/verbal. \n\n\n\nThe Legislature mandates the State Fire Marshal designate fire hazard severity zones and assign to each zone a rating reflecting the degree of severity of fire hazard. \n\n\n\nFire Hazard Severity Zone maps are developed using a science-based and field-tested model. With the new update the latest technology and science are being included into the maps and will include new factors like land use changes\, significant extreme wind event data\, as well as a model that is more spatially detailed. \n\n\n\nInterested in how these proposed changes affect you? Type in your address to see the change difference between 2007 and 2023. \n\n\n\nAdditional Information: \n\n\n\nFHSZ News Release_2022 \n\n\n\nFHSZ Info Sheet \n\n\n\nFHSZ FAQs 2022
