Reducing Hazardous Fuel Loads for Forest Health & Wildfire Risk Reduction

For the last two months Napa Firewise and the Pacific Union College have been using mastication machinery to reduce ladder fuels along and below a ridge between Angwin and Pope Valley. The goal is to improve the health of this important forest while reducing a wildfire’s intensity as it approaches the community of Angwin, so that it can be effectively suppressed. Last week, the project team toured the recent work with consulting foresters and made plans to remove wind and snowstorm-damaged vegetation, taking advantage of the fallen trees to significantly move this important forest towards wildfire and climate resiliency. This project is funded by a Cal Fire Forest Health Grant and CCI.
