Hazardous Fuel Reduction Projects

Treatment Type

Napa Firewise uses a treatment-agnostic approach to wildfire mitigation, selecting the right tools for each landscape and long-term goal. This flexibility ensures the greatest ecological benefit and cost-effectiveness while reducing wildfire risk.

Developing wildfire resilience projects across the county since 2007

The recent Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP), completed in 2020 with Napa County, gave new momentum to this work, helping prioritize high-risk areas and leading to historic county investments in community resilience.

Working with funders such as CAL FIRE and PG&E, we’ve created strategic fuel breaks, protected critical infrastructure, and implemented largescale forest health projects.

Recent wildfire incidents are proving that fuel mitigation strategies in the county are effective. Investments from the Napa Valley Vintners to re-establish old fire roads are being used in firefighter response and tactical strategy.

Our interactive project dashboard offers residents a transparent view of what’s been completed, what’s underway, and what’s planned for the next 2–5 years, including projects we hope to fund.

Partner With Us

Many wildfire resilience projects happen across a mix of public and private land. By signing a Landowner Access Agreement, you give Napa Firewise permission to evaluate your property as part of larger fuel reduction projects.

While signing an agreement does not guarantee work will occur on your land, it is a critical step in scoping and prioritizing projects. With landowner participation, we can design fuel breaks, improve access routes, and identify the treatments that will best protect high-risk communities.

Funded by Napa County, a perimeter fuel break was established around Circle Oaks using CAL FIRE crews for pile burning, hand thinning, followed by 70 acres of grazing.

  • Steele Canyon Roadside

33 acres of roadside fuels treated on Steele Canyon, an area directly affected by the 2020 Hennessey fire.

  • Old Lawley Roadside

Hazardous fuels thinned along 3.5 miles of roadway on Old Lawley Toll Road in Calistoga.

  • Crystal Springs Roadside

This project addresses the lingering effects of the 2020 Glass Fire, removing trees that pose a threat.

2024
  • Napa Valley Vintners Fire Road Rehabilitation

Launched in 2023, a joint NVV–Napa Firewise project is restoring 100 miles of legacy dozer lines to boost fire response, safety, and community resilience.

  • St. Helena Hospital Utility Protection

Crews tackled hazardous fuels in a wildfire-prone Napa corridor, clearing debris, reopening vital routes, and safeguarding utilities for the Deer Park community.

  • Shadybrook Community Evacuation Route

Approximately 10 acres, across 0.7 miles, of roadside fuels were cleared within the Coombsville-Wildhorse Valley Fire Safe Council to improve evacuation route for nearby residents.

  • Tucker Acres Fuel Break

The Tucker Farm Center parcel lies in between State Highway 29 and Bothe State Park with a neighborhood above it.  Proper vegetation management in this area had not taken place in an estimated 50 years with dead and dying oaks, grey pine, madrone, and shrub, needing to be cleared.
